Picking products that actually convert
5 filters for choosing TikTok Shop products before you spend a single video on them.
5 min read
Most TikTok Shop creators pick products wrong. They pick what's trending, what looks easy, or what has the highest commission. None of those predict whether a product will convert FROM YOUR account.
Here's the filter that does.
Filter 1: Niche match (most important)
The product must reinforce your niche, not contradict it.
If your account is fitness-focused, a $29 mini handheld vacuum is a niche-killer even if it's trending. Your followers came for fitness; this video tells the algorithm you're not actually a fitness creator.
Test: would this product fit naturally in your existing top 9 videos? If no, skip it.
Filter 2: Price under $50
Above $50, conversion drops sharply on TikTok Shop. Viewers buy on impulse here. Anything that requires "let me think about it" doesn't get bought.
Sweet spot: $15–$40. High enough commission to matter, low enough for impulse.
Filter 3: Real reviews
Look at the product's existing reviews on TikTok Shop. Below 4.3 stars: skip. Above 4.5 with 100+ reviews: green light.
Reviews aren't just for buyer trust — they give you script material ("here's what real buyers said"). That's gold for proof-reaction videos.
Filter 4: Currently viral content existing
Search the product on TikTok. Are 5+ creators making content about it RIGHT NOW (last 14 days)?
Yes: you have proof of concept and you can ride a wave. No: you'd be the first, which is high-risk for a new creator. Wait or pick differently.
Filter 5: Solves a specific problem
Vague products ("nice candle") convert worse than specific-problem products ("candle that doesn't smoke when blown out"). Buyers need to imagine WHO this is for.
If you can't finish the sentence "this is for people who…" in 8 seconds, the product isn't ready for video.
The 60-second product audit
Before posting any product video, run this:
- Niche match — yes/no
- Price under $50 — yes/no
4.3 stars — yes/no
5 creators making content currently — yes/no
- Specific problem — yes/no
3 yeses minimum. Less than 3 = pick a different product.
